Africa's cities are among the most dynamic and culturally rich on earth, and they remain dramatically undervisited by international tourists. Here's where to start.

Africa contains some of the world's most extraordinary cities — cities with ancient history, extraordinary food cultures, vibrant art scenes, and natural environment access that European or North American cities simply cannot provide. The continent receives a fraction of the international tourism it deserves, largely because of outdated perceptions about infrastructure and safety.

Cape Town, South Africa consistently appears on lists of the world's most beautiful cities for legitimate reasons. Table Mountain — a flat-topped mountain rising 1,085 meters directly from the city center — creates a geographical drama unlike any other urban environment. The Winelands (45 minutes away) are world-class. The food scene rivals any city in the Southern Hemisphere. The issues with inequality and crime in specific areas are real and require informed navigation, but Cape Town's tourist zones are genuinely safe and well-organized.

Marrakech, Morocco offers North Africa's most intense medina experience. The labyrinthine alleyways of the old city, the Djemaa el-Fna square with its nightly spectacle of food stalls and performers, the riads (traditional courtyard houses) that serve as boutique hotels — the experience is unlike anything in Europe or Asia. Budget: $80–$150/day for a high-quality riad and excellent food.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia is the continent's most under-visited major city by international tourists and among its most historically significant. The National Museum contains Lucy (Australopithecus afarensis, 3.2 million years old). The Ethiopian cuisine — injera flatbread with berbere-spiced stews — is a serious food culture with few equivalents elsewhere. The city is at 2,355 meters elevation, making it naturally cooler than most African cities.
